Project and/or Grant leadership
  • Development of LituanicaSat-2 satellite. The team contributed to the development and testing of the satellite rocket engine, as well as to the design and development of various parts of the positioning and control system, radio communication equipment.

  • Completed project TRACOFUNAT (“Training Courses Fundamentals of Aerospace Technologies”), funded by Lithuanian government via European Space Agency (ESA) under the PECS agreement. During the project, a lecture module for students of the Faculty of Physics “Fundamentals of Aerospace Technologies” was created.

  • On-going project TORTILAC (“Development of thermally optimised resistojet for laser ablative cutting fabrication”), funded by Lithuanian government via European Space Agency (ESA) under the PECS agreement. Project was started in 1st quarter of 2020 year. During the project novel design and manufacturing method of water-fueled resistojet will be developed. The project’s consortium consists of Vilnius University (project leader), Center for Physical Science and Technology (FTMC), Vilnius Gediminas Technical University and Nanoavionika.

Science popularization: scientific and educational activities

In 2017 I have prepared lectures on Fundamentals of aerospace technologies. The material of lectures (in lithuanian) is publicly available at url: https://web.vu.lt/ff/l.tumonis/ktp/

In 2019, I was invited as guest presenter in the "Cafe scientifique" project. I presented the presentation with the title "Mars Assault" about robotic explorations of planet Mars. Link to event presentation announcement: https://www.facebook.com/events/936041126594561/

In 2020, based on my interview given for the university Journal "Spectrum", an article titled "Cosmos missions: a return to the Moon, a trip to Mars and satellite Internet”. https://www.vu.lt/naujienos/spectrum/straipsniai/8264-kosmoso-misijos-grizimas-i-menuli-kelione-i-marsa-ir-palydovinis-internetas The article was also republished in several other news portals (lrt.lt, elektronika.lt, bernardinai.lt) and Faculty's website.

The article caught the attention of the national broadcaster, and on October 16, 2020 I was invited for an interview on the national TV morning TV show. A recording of the interview is available at: https://www.vu.lt/naujienos/spectrum/straipsniai/8264-kosmoso-misijos-grizimas-i-menuli-kelione-i-marsa-ir-palydovinis-internetas

In March 20, 2021 The program "School of Creativity" was shown on National Television "LRT". Journey to Mars and back". In it, I was invited to share knowledge about trips to the planet Mars. I was one of interlocutors. The same series has been viewed almost 30 thousand times on the YouTube channel. https://www.lrt.lt/mediateka/irasas/2000144545/kurybingumo-mokykla-kelione-i-marsa-ir-atgal

It should be noted that everywhere I introduced myself as an employee of VU FF, thus emphasizing the connection with the university and the faculty and it probably increased its visibility.

I participate in the development of the Lithuanian section of the free encyclopedia "Wikipedia": https://lt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naudotojas:Liudas_Tumonis I help to localize the open source parametric spatial modeling program "FreeCad". I already translated 30% of program interface. My contribution to the translation: https://crowdin.com/profile/liudas_tumonis

In september of 2022 I gave an interview to the radio channel "Žinių radijas" about Nasa's Artemis lunar mission: https://www.ziniuradijas.lt/laidos/aktualusis-interviu/ar-chersono-deokupacija-taptu-raktu-i-ukrainos-pergale?video=1

In september of 2022 gave an interview to the internet business news portal "Verslo žinios" for innovations news podcast about Lithuanian academia's achievements in space sector,
