On 25 September at 15:00, in the Great Physics Auditorium (Faculty of Physics, VU, Saulėtekio av. 9), famous astronomer Vicent Martinez, professor at the University of Valencia and director of the Astronomical Observatory of the University of Valencia Prof. Vicent J. Martínez will give a public lecture "What Killed the Dinosaurs? And Other Science Stories You Were Wrongly Told".

"Ask anyone what killed the dinosaurs, and the automatic response will be: a meteorite. This is one of those science things that everyone knows, including Hollywood filmmakers. Except it may not be true. Maybe it wasn't a meteorite, but volcanoes.

Immerse yourself in the exciting world of science, where the pursuit of knowledge continually reshapes our understanding of the universe. This talk explores the thrilling journey of scientific discovery, highlighting how past conceptions and long-held beliefs have been challenged and overcome throughout history. Many of these misconceptions hinder progress, just as dragons drawn on the edges of ancient maps discouraged exploration. From ether and celestial spheres to controversies over the extinction of the dinosaurs and the latest advances in dark matter, join us as we discover how science is evolving, discarding old dogmas to embrace new ideas and deeper perspectives," the professor describes the lecture.

Dr Vicent J. Martínez is a Spanish astronomer and professor at the University of Valencia, specialising in cosmology, particularly the study of the large-scale distribution of matter in the Universe and the formation and evolution of galaxies. He pioneered the application of fractals in this field of research, as well as introducing their study into university teaching in Spain. He is one of the authors of the giant planet with Trojans theory to explain the mysterious behaviour of Tabby's star.

This scientific visit is promoted by ACEBaltic.
