Choosing a Professional Practice Topic

When Completing Professional Practice at the VU Faculty of Physics:

1. At the beginning of the autumn semester of their fourth year, students must select a Professional Practice topic from the list of available topics published on the Faculty’s website (see below) or develop a topic of their own.
2. The topic must be agreed upon with the supervisor.
3. Once the topic has been agreed upon, the student must submit an application “Request for internship at Vilnius University” via the IS.VU system.
4. The application must include:

• • the title of the topic in Lithuanian and English;
  • the name of the supervisor;
  • the institute at which the work will be defended;
  • the statement: “I confirm that the topic has been agreed upon with the supervisor.”

The application must be submitted by 15 September. Students who fail to submit the application by the deadline will not be allowed to defend their Professional Practice work.

IMPORTANT! The Professional Practice topic must not be identical to the planned topic of the Bachelor’s thesis.

The practice starts no later than 1 October and ends by 23 December.

When Completing Professional Practice Outside the VU Faculty of Physics:

1. At the beginning of the autumn semester of their fourth year, students must agree with a prospective Professional Practice supervisor on completing their Professional Practice.
2. The topic must be agreed upon with the Chair of the Study Program Committee (SPC) by submitting the completed registration form. The SPC must designate the institute at which the work will be defended.
3. Once the topic has been approved by the Chair of the SPC, the student must complete and arrange for the signing of a tripartite Professional Practice agreement. The Professional Practice agreement must be signed by: the student; the head of the institution offering the Professional Practice or their authorised representative; the Dean of the VU Faculty of Physics. If the student is employed by the institution where the Professional Practice will be completed, a tripartite agreement is not required.
4. Once the topic has been agreed upon and approved by the SPC, the student must submit a free-form application via the IS.VU system.
5. The application must include:

• • the title of the topic in Lithuanian and English;
  • the name of the supervisor;
  • the institute at which the work will be defended;
  • the statement: “I confirm that the topic has been agreed upon with the supervisor.”
  • the SPC-approved registration form as an attachment.

The application must be submitted by 15 September. Students who fail to submit the application by the deadline will not be allowed to defend their Professional Practice work.

IMPORTANT! The Professional Practice topic must not be identical to the planned topic of the Bachelor’s thesis.

Professional Practice Defence

 

Professional practice is done during the entire semester. At the end of the semester, the professional practice has to be defended at the defence committee of the particular department. If the Professional Practice is completed outside the Faculty of Physics, the Study Programme Committee must assign the student to one of the Faculty’s defence committees.

The dates for Professional Practice defences for the autumn semester of the 2026–2027 academic year will be announced at the beginning of January.

Usually, the defence is conducted at the end of the exam session.
