IMPORTANT! Starting from the spring semester of the 2025/2026 academic year, Research Papers (MTD) will no longer be included in study programmes. They will be replaced by Research Projects (MTP).
Scientific research project is a mandatory part of every graduate study programme at the Faculty of Physics. The specific number of research projects and their credit value depend on the particular study programme. The topic of the Research Project must correspond to the field of the master’s study programme.
The aim of the Research Project is to develop students’ abilities to independently conduct scientific work and address problems arising in the process, to perform analysis of scientific sources, and to evaluate their own results in the context of other scientific studies.
Information about the final defences of the last remaining Research Papers (MTD) in the autumn semester of the 2025/2026 academic year can be found below.
Defence of the Scientific Research Work, Autumn 2025/2026
The dates of the Scientific Research Work defences for the autumn semester of the 2025/2026 academic year will be announced at the beginning of January.

Topics for Scientific Research Project
Research Projects may be carried out at the Faculty of Physics, at another VU faculty, or at a research institution.
Institutes of the Faculty of Physics where Research Projects may be conducted:
-
Institute of Chemical Physics
-
Institute of Photonics and Nanotechnology
-
Laser Research Center
-
Institute of Applied Electrodynamics and Telecommunications
-
Institute of Theoretical Physics and Astronomy
At the beginning of each semester, students must choose a Research Project topic from the list of proposed topics provided on the Faculty website (see below) or propose their own topic. The topic must be agreed upon with the supervisor. After the topic is approved, the student must submit a free-form request in the is.vu system and indicate the title of the topic in Lithuanian and English, the supervisor, and the institute where the project will be defended. The request must also include the sentence: “I confirm that the topic has been approved by the supervisor.”
The request must be submitted by 15 February (spring semester) and 20 September (autumn semester). Students who do not submit the request on time will not be allowed to defend their projects.
Topics proposed for Scientific Research Projects (MTP) in the spring semester of the 2025–2026 academic year:
(to be published at the beginning of January 2026)
If a student wishes to carry out a Research Project outside the Faculty of Physics, they must first coordinate with a potential supervisor regarding the possibility of conducting the project. Afterwards, the topic and the hosting institution must be approved by the chair of the study programme committee by completing a registration form. Once approval from the SPK chair is obtained, the student must submit a free-form request in the is.vu system, indicating the topic title in Lithuanian and English, the supervisor, and the institute where the project will be defended. The request must also include the sentence: “I confirm that the topic has been approved by the supervisor.” The completed registration form signed by the SPK chair must be attached to the request.
The request must be submitted by 15 February (spring semester) and 20 September (autumn semester). Students who do not submit the request on time will not be allowed to defend their projects.
When carrying out a Research Project outside Vilnius University, a tripartite agreement must be signed. The three-party agreement form can be found here.
If the student is employed at a company, a tripartite agreement is not required.
