From June 27 to 29, a team of six astronomers from our Faculty of Physics, led by Dr Šarūnas Mikolaitis, travelled to Warsaw to meet with Polish colleagues as part of the first in person scientific meeting of the project “The History of C, N, and O in the Galaxy”.
The working sessions took place at the Nicolaus Copernicus Astronomical Centre of the Polish Academy of Sciences. The Lithuanian delegation was hosted by Dr Rodolfo Smiljanic. Heitor Ernandes from Lund University (Sweden) also attended the meeting – he will officially join the project in October.
This meeting provided an opportunity for participants to know each other and make key decisions regarding the scientific strategy and tasks for the three-year project. The astrophysics team is studying the abundance of carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen in stars within the Milky Way galaxy. The researchers hope to uncover the stellar and Galactic evolutionary processes that influence the distribution of these elements. More information can be found here.
The project is funded through the DAINA 3 program, which supports Polish–Lithuanian scientific collaboration. (Project number: S-LL-24-4).
