From 23 to 27 June, researchers from the Institute of Theoretical Physics and Astronomy at Vilnius University Faculty of Physic took part in the annual meeting of the European Astronomical Society (EAS).
Professor Gražina Tautvaišienė, Vice-President of the International Astronomical Union; Dr Arūnas Kučinskas, Chair of the Board of Directors of the journal Astronomy and Astrophysics; Dr Šarūnas Mikolaitis; Dr Edita Stonkutė; Dr Markus Ambrosch; PhD students Barkha Bale and Vilius Bagdonas (who joined remotely) – presented their research. Students from the Faculty of Physics at Vilnius University, Erikas Cicėnas and Milda Valytė, also took part in the event. Dr Kastytis Zubovas represented the Center for Physical Sciences and Technology.
Europe’s premier astronomy event, hosted in Cork, Ireland, brought together over 2,000 scientists from across the globe.
The EAS aims to advance the development of astronomy in Europe by bringing together researchers and institutions for collaborative work and joint problem solving at the European level.
VU astronomers are also active in this area. E. Stonkutė and G. Tautvaišienė co-organised the European Astronomical Communities Forum and gave invited presentations. Š. Mikolaitis gave an invited presentation at the session dedicated to rethinking astronomy education in Europe and, together with another VU researcher C. Viscasillas Vazquez, contributed to the organization of this session. G. Tautvaišienė co-organized a special session dedicated to promoting scientific cooperation between Europe and Africa. European astronomers are also uniting in making proposals for the creation of a new powerful infrastructure. G. Tautvaišienė gave a presentation overviewing the possibilities that a new multi-channel high-resolution spectrograph at the 8.2 m European Southern Observatory telescope would open up.
