On December 3, the Community Welfare Department of Vilnius University (VU) invites the community to a conference "Beyond the Wall of Silence: The Challenges of Neurodiversity," dedicated to openly discussing what is still too often overlooked in society—different ways of thinking, perceiving, and communicating, and the challenges and opportunities associated with them. The conference will be opened by Prof. Vilmantė Pakalniškienė, Vice-Rector for Organizational Development and Community Affairs at Vilnius University.

Neurodiversity is a term that describes natural differences in human brain function and behavior. Although this term refers to the diversity of neurological functions in all people, it is often used in relation to autism spectrum disorders, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and dyslexia. Neurodiversity aims to emphasize that this is not a disability, but simply a different way of thinking, feeling, and perceiving the world.
The topic of neurodiversity is becoming increasingly relevant both in higher education and in society as a whole. Each of us can contribute to creating a more understanding and open environment – whether as a colleague, lecturer, student, or manager. This conference is an invitation to pause, listen, and reflect on how we build relationships, how we respond to differences.
The event will explore:
-
why there is still reluctance to talk about neurodiversity and the stigma associated with it;
-
how to overcome feelings of shame, isolation, and a culture of silence;
-
what changes are needed so that we can see, understand, and support each other better.
Dalyviai (-ės) išgirs ekspertų (-ių) įžvalgas, praktinius pavyzdžius ir įkvepiančias istorijas, padedančias geriau suprasti neuroįvairovės spektrą – nuo disleksijos iki autizmo ir dėmesio sutrikimų.
