Scientific research work is a mandatory part of every graduate study programme at the Faculty of Physics. The particular number of scientific research works to be done and the amount of credits dedicated to them differs from programme to programme (see below). This work can be done at one of the Faculty of Physics scientific groups, other Vilnius University faculties or other research institutions. The topic of scientific research work has to correspond to the study field of a particular study programme (physics, electronics engineering, material technologies).
The aim of scientific research work is to improve student capacity to independently perform scientific research work, to solve problems arising in the work, to conduct an analysis of scientific material and to assess their work results in the context of other scientific works.
Topics for scientific research work
At the beginning of the semester, students have to choose a scientific research topic from suggested ones at the faculty website (see below) and to agree on it with an academic supervisor. Students are also free to suggest their own topics for supervisors. Students have to make the final agreement on the topic during the forst two weeks of the semester. After the agreement, the academic supervisor must inform the administrator of a particular institute and provide name and study programme of the student as well as the name of the agreed topic.

If the student wants to do scientific research work in a scientific group not based in the Faculty of Physics, the student must agree with a possible supervisor of scientific research work from that institution. After that, the topic and place of the research work must be coordinated with the chairman of the study program committee and the registration form must be filled out, which is also sent to the chairman of the study program committee.
In order for students to do scientific research work outside Vilnius University, a three-party agreement has to be signed. In this case, contact Dean's office via e-mail studijos@ff.vu.lt. The three-party agreement form can be found here.
Defence of scientific research work
Scientific research work is done during the entire semester. At the end of the semester, scientific research work has to be defended at the defence committee of the particular department. Usually, the defence is conducted at the end of the exam session. Particular dates of the scientific research work defence are published at the faculty website (see below). If scientific research work was done not at the Faculty of Physics, the student has to contact the chair of the study programme committee of vice-dean for studies to be assigned for defence in one of the department defence committees.
