Project summary and purpose

During the research project the postdoctoral fellow will explore new ways of interaction with atoms of spatially inhomogeneous vortex light beams. It is planned to investigate the localization of cold atoms in a single spatial region smaller than the optical wavelength using the coherent interaction between the vortex light beams and atoms. This issue is important because the diffraction usually limits the resolution to an optical wavelength. In addition, it is planned to investigate the interaction of optical vortices with Rydberg atoms. The Rydberg atoms have recently received a considerable amount of interest due to their suitability for quantum information processing. The results of the research project are expected to be used as direct recommendations to cold-atom experimentalists. The project will allow the the postdoctoral fellow to raise his scientific qualification in solving modern problems of atomic physics and quantum optics, and will expand his knowledge in this and other areas of physics.
