Scientists from the Institute of Theoretical Physics and Astronomy at Vilnius University (VU) Faculty of Physics, in collaboration with colleagues from the Nicolaus Copernicus Astronomical Centre of the Polish Academy of Sciences, are conducting an international study to explore the evolution of life-essential chemical elements in the cosmos. The astrophysics team is studying the abundance of carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen in stars within the Milky Way galaxy. The researchers hope to uncover the stellar and Galactic evolutionary processes that influence the distribution of these elements.

The asteroid "Sarbievius" is named after Motiejus Kazimieras Sarbievius (1595-1640), a professor at Vilnius University (VU) and a poet of the Baroque period. The asteroid was discovered by Dr Kazimieras Černis, a researcher at the Institute of Theoretical Physics and Astronomy, Faculty of Physics, Vilnius University, at the Molėtai Astronomical Observatory.

Vilnius University physicist Dr. Laurynas Dagys with a team of international scientists has introduced a new practical solution that could advance the fields where magnetic resonance is applied today. They investigate and employ a technique called hyperpolarization which considerably enhances sensitivity of conventional methods. Published in the prestigious scientific journal Science Advances, this study eases the way to more efficient disease diagnostics and smaller, cheaper, and more accessible devices.
