For the first time in Lithuania, on 14 September the CERN LHCb (Large Hadron Collider beauty) collaboration conference has started in Vilnius University (VU). The event, LHCb Week Vilnius, brought together hundreds of scientists, engineers, and early-career researchers involved in the LHCb collaboration, representing research institutions from around the world.
In 1966, just six years after the world’s first laser was created, the first laser in Lithuania was fired at Vilnius University. Today, the country is home to more than 60 laser and photonics companies, with over 2,000 highly qualified specialists working across the sector and its research centres. More than 90% of Lithuania’s laser industry output is exported.
“Whilst travelling, I realised that sometimes we live in bubbles and the problems we face seem bigger than they really are,” says Mindaugas Gudaitis, a bachelor’s student at the Faculty of Physics, Vilnius University (VU). He spent the spring semester on an exchange programme at Chung-Ang University, where he gained not only academic knowledge but also a unique cultural experience.

Vilnius University (VU) Photonics and Nanotechnology Master's student Akvilė Paskačimaitė spent the final week of summer at the Eindhoven Semicon Summer School in the Netherlands. The event brought together 80 participants from 16 countries, who attended expert lectures, visited leading technology companies, and collaborated on team projects.

Dr Gordon Zyla from the Laser Research Center at the Faculty of Physics, Vilnius University (VU), has been awarded funding by the European Research Council (ERC) under its prestigious Starting Grant scheme. His project, METAMORPHOS, is the only ERC Starting Grant awarded in Lithuania in this year’s call.
At the 28th International Conference-School "Advanced Materials and Technologies 2026," held in Palanga on 24–28 August, the poster presentation by Marija Kalnaitytė – a doctoral student in the Advanced Biomedical Photonics Group of the Laser Research Center (LRC) at the Faculty of Physics, Vilnius University (VU) – was named the best. The event brought together around 120 participants from 22 countries around the world.
Every summer, hundreds of talented students from around the world participate in student programmes at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). Between June and August, 13 students from Vilnius University (VU) spent time at the world's largest particle physics laboratory, marking the highest number of Lithuanian participants in the organisation’s history. The undergraduate and postgraduate students joined a range of programmes lasting from a few weeks to three months.
Astrophysicists at Vilnius University (VU), Associate Professor Edita Stonkutė and Dr Carlos Viscasillas Vázquez, have initiated an award named after the Finnish astronomer Liisi Oterma. The medal, established by the Europlanet Northern Europe Regional Hub to recognise and honour the exceptional contributions of women to planetary science and astronomy in the Nordic and Baltic regions, will be awarded this year.
The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope (NGRST) is set to be launched into space on 30 August. Associate Professor Edita Stonkutė, an astrophysicist at Vilnius University (VU), describes it as one of NASA’s most ambitious space telescopes of the 21st century, designed to expand humanity’s understanding of the Universe fundamentally. This wide-field telescope will enable the observation of vast regions of the sky, the study of dark matter and dark energy, and the search for thousands of new exoplanets, including Earth-like worlds.
